LOCAL-FIRST, ALWAYS

No internet?
No problem.

Add expenses offline. When you’re together, sync encrypted updates phone to phone.

Nearby sync needs Google Play services, permissions, and both phones on the group’s Nearby screen.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN

A shared bill.
Not shared data.

Your expense content is end-to-end encrypted. Your ledger lives on your phone, not on a SplitFree server.

Online sync uses third-party Nostr relays. Relays can see connection and routing metadata, not encrypted expense content.

Every group.
One place.

Trips, flatmates, dinner clubs. Keep each group’s expenses and balances together.

Different currencies.
Same clarity.

Track shared costs across currencies, with separate balances. No mixed totals or exchange-rate guesswork.

Is it actually free?

Yes. There is no subscription or paid tier. SplitFree is open source under GPL-3.0-or-later, and the source is available on GitHub. The app has no added analytics or ad-network SDKs.

How do I install the APK?

Tap “Download for Android” on your Android phone, then open the downloaded APK. If Android asks, allow your browser or file manager to install apps from this source. You can turn that permission off after installation.

Android 8.0 or newer is required. Download only from this repository’s official GitHub release. You can check the file’s SHA-256 checksum below.

Does it work without the internet?

Yes. Add expenses and calculate balances locally. For Nearby sync, both members open the group’s Nearby screen, enable Bluetooth, grant the requested permissions, and tap Sync when the peer appears. Google Play services handles the local connection.

When online, encrypted updates can also travel through third-party Nostr relays. Offline changes are not instantly visible to other members; the phones still need to sync.

What does “private” mean here?

Your expense content is end-to-end encrypted for synchronization. There is no developer-operated SplitFree backend. This does not mean anonymity: Nostr relays can see IP addresses, timing, and routing metadata. Google Play services is used for Nearby sync and QR scanning and may collect diagnostics.

People in your group can read shared expenses and retain history they already received. Keep invites private. Read the full privacy details (opens in a new tab).

Does this website collect my expense data?

No. The split example runs in your browser and does not save or send the amounts you enter. This website has no analytics or advertising scripts.

To keep download details current, the page requests release and star-count metadata from GitHub’s public API. GitHub receives normal connection metadata, such as your IP address. No expense data or credentials are included. The website host also receives ordinary page and asset requests.

What happens if I lose my phone?

Back up your 24-word recovery phrase and export your groups. The phrase restores your identity; group exports separately preserve available group data and keys. Keep both somewhere safe. There is no email-based account recovery or developer cloud backup.

Can I use it on iPhone or the web?

SplitFree is currently an Android app. This website introduces the app and offers a small illustrative split example; it is not a web version of your ledger. There is no iOS app at the moment.

Is there a text version of the film?

The film uses music and sound effects, with no spoken audio.

  1. 0:00: Group chat messages about shared bills resolve into “Who owes whom?”
  2. 0:03: The SplitFree logo appears: “Split expenses. Keep it yours.”
  3. 0:06: A phone shows groups and balances: “Your groups. One place.”
  4. 0:09: A 1,600 INR example expense is entered. Equal, exact, percent, and shares options appear.
  5. 0:14: The expense is saved on the phone. Balances update to show who owes whom.
  6. 0:18: A payment made outside the app is recorded and the balance updates.
  7. 0:23: Two nearby phones exchange encrypted updates without internet for the transfer.
  8. 0:28: A citron card reads “No signup. No subscription. No servers. No tracking. Open source.” “No servers” means no developer-operated backend, and “no tracking” means no added analytics or ad-network SDKs; relay and Google Play services metadata still apply.
  9. 0:32: The logo returns with the tagline and GitHub address. Free, open source, Android.
